Many childhood memories of being in the kitchen involve licking the bowl clean after something sweet has been whipped up, and we all know that there's no better way to round off a meal than with a good dessert. This collection features a range of children's dessert recipes that can be made with the little ones' helping hands!

Nutella popsicles recipe
These Nutella popsicles are made with just two ingredients. They taste a bit like a chocolate Paddle Pop but you can make them at home and the kids will love them.

Donut Cake

This cake is a riff on the justly famous Busy-Day Cake of cookbook author and local-food pioneer Edna Lewis, and is renamed "Donut Cake" because the combination of nutmeg and vanilla really tastes like donuts. While it's baking you will be glad that, busy as you are, you sensibly left five minutes in your day to get this cake into the oven. It fills the house with such a wonderful aroma.

Ingredients
1 stick butter, at room temperature
1 1/3 cups granulated sugar
3 large eggs, at room temperature
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons cornmeal
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (or half as much table salt)
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, ideally freshly grated
1/2 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
Directions
Heat the oven to 375°F. Butter and flour a 9-inch springform pan, and set it aside.
Beat the butter and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer until light and fluffy, about two minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating to incorporate after each addition, then add in the vanilla. You may want to periodically scrape down sides of bowl with a rubber spatula. Set batter aside.
Whisk together the flour, cornmeal, salt, baking powder, and nutmeg. Add the flour mixture to the batter in 3 parts, alternating with the buttermilk, starting and ending with flour. Make sure each addition is incorporated before adding the next, but don't over-beat it at the end. Spread the batter in the prepared pan and smooth the top.
Bake until the top is puffed and golden brown and a tester inserted in the center comes out clean, about 35 minutes (Or just push the top gently with your fingertip and make sure it seems inclined to spring back).
Serve warm or at room temperature, with lightly sweetened fruit (add about a tablespoon of sugar to a pint of sliced strawberries and two sliced nectarines) and whipped cream. And don't be dismayed if the cake sinks significantly upon cooling: it will, and that's fine.

Heart Lollipops

These fun lollipops will be loved by many little princesses, and probably a few princes too. I used Wiltons heart shaped lollipop moulds (they call it a Cookie Pan as you can also bake heart shaped cookies) which makes 6 individual heart shaped lollipops.

Heart Lollipops

INGREDIENTS
55g butter
1 tbsp golden syrup
150g white chocolate, chopped
2-3 drops red or pink food colour (optional but gives a nice pink colour)
50g Rice Krispies
Red writing icing
Wooden skewers or lollipop sticks

METHOD
Put the butter, syrup and a pinch of salt in a fairly large saucepan, put the chocolate in a large bowl.
Heat the butter and syrup until the butter has melted then stir in the reed food colour, if using.
Pour the warm butter over the chocolate and stir until the chocolate has melted. Alternatively stir the chocolate into the butter and syrup mixture until melted.
Add the Rice Krispies and stir until the Rice Krispies are well coated in the chocolate.
Press the mixture into a heart shaped lollipop mould, add the lollipop sticks and chill until solid (approx. 2 hours). Remove from the moulds by levering gently with a blunt knife, and decorate with the writing icing.
If you don’t have a heart shaped pan then line the base of a 20cm x 20cm (8in x 8in) cake tin with baking parchment and press the Rice Krispie and chocolate mixture into the tin.
Chill until just firm (about 30 minutes) then cut out hearts using a lightly oiled 6cm cookie cutter. Transfer the hearts to a baking sheet and chill until solid and continue as above. Insert a wooden skewer into each to make a lollipop.
Store the hearts in a cool place, or the refrigerator.

Strawberry Sorbet

Ingredients:

-2/3 cup filtered water
-2/3 cup organic granulated white sugar
-5 cups frozen organic strawberries (thawed)
-2 tbsp fresh squeezed organic lemon juice

Directions:

1.Pour the water and sugar into a small saucepan and heat over medium high temperature. Stir until the sugar completely dissolves (3 to 5 minutes), and then continue to stir until a thick syrup forms (about 1 more minute).
2.Pour the finished syrup into a heat proof container and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
3.Place thawed strawberries in the food processor and puree. Add the lemon juice and chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
4.Combine the chilled strawberry puree and chilled syrup and freeze in the ice cream maker, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Note: If you don’t have an ice cream maker, then pour the mixture into a stainless steel pan, cover with plastic wrap and freeze for about 3 1/2 hours. Then remove from freezer and partially thaw at room temperature. Place partially thawed mixture in the food processor and process for a few seconds until you break all the large ice crystals. Place back into stainless steel pan and refrigerate for 3 1/2 more hours. After this your sorbet is ready to serve.
