While I no longer live in San Francisco, I dream of the dessert pizza at Gialina Pizzeria to this day. It was buttery and flaky and slathered with mascarpone and chocolate. The good news? San Franciscan or not, there are a few great dessert pizza recipes out there just awaiting a hungry audience.
The nice thing about dessert pizzas is you can make them using leftover pizza dough and whatever seasonal fruits you have on hand. If time doesn't allow for homemade pizza dough, many of these recipes suggest store-bought dough or the always delicious cheater's version: puff pastry. If you're a Nutella fan, you can never go wrong with that route, and sweeter cheeses like mascarpone are always a hit. Dessert pizzas are a relatively low-stress dessert, and are wonderful for large crowds and parties. Or just date night at home.

While sweet pizza may sound odd, there's really nothing strange about topping a neutral-tasting crust with sweet instead of the usual savory. If you've ever had a Nutella-filled crepe with or without fruit, you should have an idea about how delicious this pizza will taste. Trust me, this pie is sure to please everyone from kids to adults. And feel free to get creative with the toppings--any fruit, nuts, dried coconut, or chocolate chips will be delicious.

Yield: 1 pizza pie
Ingredients:
1 prepared homemade or store-bought pizza dough
2 tbsp. unsalted butter, melted
1/2 c. Nutella or other hazelnut-chocolate (or all chocolate) spread--you can even make it yourself
1 banana, sliced
1 c. strawberries, sliced
powdered sugar for sprinkling, optional
Preparation:
1. Place pizza or baking stone in oven if using. Preheat oven to 500ºF.
2. Bring dough to room temperature (it should roughly double in size) and on a well-floured surface, stretch or roll it out to a flat circle.
3. Place stretched dough onto pizza peel, if using a baking stone, or onto a pizza pan or baking sheet.
4. Brush melted butter on top of dough, leaving about an inch around the edges bare for the crust. Using a fork, poke holes all over the dough to prevent it from bubbling up too much.
5. Transfer dough to oven and bake about 10 minutes, until the crust is golden brown.
6. Remove dough from oven and carefully spread Nutella or other spread on top, again leaving an edge for the crust. Place banana and strawberry slices on top. Feel free to add any other toppings, such as hazelnuts, pecans, dried coconut, chocolate chips, or other fruit.
7. Return pizza to oven and bake for 5 minutes. Remove and sprinkle with powdered sugar, if desired. Serve immediately.
